Hot Stamp Decoration for Automotive Products:
How is hot stamp decoration used in the automotive industry?

It is very common to see hot stamp decoration for automotive products. Hot Stamping (also frequently called foil stamping) is a dry product decoration process. After a piece it is molded, it comes to a decoration station. Pressure and temperature are applied (via a stamping die and mold) to release pigment foil from a film onto the part creating durable decoration.

Hot stamp decoration is found in car interiors, exteriors and under hood. Because parts to be decorated encompass a large variety of different substrates, shapes and performance challenges (like exposure to high temperature) – each unique application requires a tailored approach for hot stamp success.

What is unique or special about decorating automotive products and components?

As in most markets, automotive brands and their suppliers require repeatable, high-quality decoration. Automotive part decoration often requires the use of challenging foils and difficult substrates. Brands and their suppliers require a high level of efficiency which includes everything from reduced scrap to efficient changeovers. Automotive parts have long lifespans and therefor need highly durable decoration.

What types of information are often applied to automotive parts?

People often use hot stamp technology to apply branding, decorative updates, notification, safety instruction and indicator marking on a wide range of automotive parts.

What experience does CER have with automotive product decoration?

ITW CER Logo
For over 50 years, leading automotive brands have trusted CER hot stamp technology for reliable, repeatable product marking.

These decades of experience have provided CER with a deep understanding of the common industry requirements, pain points, and durability challenges faced by automotive brands and their suppliers.

We know how to design systems for low scrap and simplified changeover that provide repeatable decoration even with the challenging foils and challenging substrates often found in automotive applications.

Car Interior

Automotive components well-suited to hot stamp decoration include:

  • carpets or mats
  • air bag logo debossing panels
  • trunk latches
  • dash clusters

Dashboard

Customers add metallic or chrome decorative upgrades to dashboard components with hot stamp decoration. CER has significant experience with dashboard decoration- particularly as it relates to:
— custom tooling sets (nesting fixtures and contoured dies) to simplify the hot stamping of complex contours that automotive dashboards require.
–expertise working with challenging foils in order reduce scrap & streamline changeovers

Car Exterior

Exterior automotive part decoration requirements vary widely from application to application. CER has expertise in high tonnage systems for rubber decoration as well as standard and customized systems for:

  • emblems
  • grills
  • exterior trim
  • tires
  • mud flaps

Under Hood Parts

CER equipment allows for optimal foil application on:

  • engine cover and belts
  • battery housings
  • fill caps.

The tooling sets we provide simplify changeovers and reduce set up time while providing consistent decoration on high temperature plastics.
